This study provides an in-depth evaluation of the state of conservation of abric de Pinos (Benissa, Alacant) rock art site. This paper offers an identification of the main alterations as well as a diagnostic of the different pathologies affecting the conservation of the rock surface. The article aims at determining the causes behind the alterations in order to propose palliative measures to guarantee the conservation of this type of rock art. This study takes into account the singularities characterising Levantine rock art, deriving from the geological nature and the environmental conditions to which they are exposed. The final aim is to contribute to raise awareness among the scientific community, the managers of this heritage and the public on the vulnerability of this art and the need to increase conservation studies such as this one in order to guarantee the short and long term preservation of this art. In addition it goes one step further to contribute to publish the results of the scientific research and the conservation interventions conducted in these type of sites included in UNESCO World Heritage List. These interventions often remain unpublished, thus limiting the advance of knowledge in such an important field, such as research on conservation of open air rock art sites.
